Evolutionary Systems Biology in Cancer

Join Franziska Michor's lab at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City as a postdoc in Evolutionary Systems Biology of Cancer!

Cancer represents one of the biggest problems for modern societies. In 2006, there were 1.4 million new cancer cases and 570,000 cancer-related deaths in the US, leading to an overall cost of $206.3 billion. By 2020, cancer deaths worldwide could reach 10 million. Therefore, an important goal of life science research is to improve tumor diagnostics and anti-cancer treatment options to alleviate cancer-related morbidity and mortality.

Our research focuses on the evolutionary dynamics of cancer. Cancer emerges due to an evolutionary process in somatic tissue. The fundamental laws of evolution can be best formulated as exact mathematical equations. Therefore, the process of cancer initiation and progression is amenable to mathematical investigation. We are interested in questions that are of crucial importance for cancer research, and we use mathematical, statistical and computational techniques to approach them. In particular, we use applied probability techniques, statistical analyses, and differential equations. Please visit http://cbio.mskcc.org/~michor for more information.

You may have a background in applied or pure mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics or computational biology; an interest in cancer biology and a work experience in probability theory and statistics is necessary. Send a CV and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to and join our lab in Manhattan!
